Firework shows canceled in HCMC and many other places in Lunar New Year due to Covid-19

Ho Chi Minh City government decided to not to hold fireworks on New Year’s Eve to celebrate the Lunar New Year to prevent and control epidemics in the area.

The decision was signed by Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Vo Van Hoan on the afternoon of February 6th, in order to strictly implement the Prime Minister’s Directive No. 05 dated January 28th on some urgent measures to prevent and combat Covid-19.

Before Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi also decided to cancel 29 previously scheduled firework shows and only will hold high altitude fireworks at one place to broadcast live. This fireworks spot will not be crowded with people, ensuring strict requirements on epidemic prevention and control.

Yesterday, a series of other localities also decided to cancel the fireworks shows on the occasion of the Lunar New Year to prevent Covid-19.

Thu Duc City seeking UK for development cooperation

Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Chairman, Nguyen Thanh Phong, welcomed the new British Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, Emily Hamblin, on February 5th

Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Chairman, Nguyen Thanh Phong, told British Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, Emily Hamblin, that the UK’s cooperation relationship with Vietnam in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular still has great potentials for development.

Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee proposed support from the UK in the fields of energy, infrastructure, education, commerce and finance.

In response, Ms. Hamblin affirmed: “In the field of finance and smart urban development, the UK wishes to cooperate with Ho Chi Minh City in building Thu Duc City”. Ms. Hamblin also said Ho Chi Minh City and the UK are cooperating to implement two projects to limit flooding and provide smart subway ticket booking service to avoid traffic jams.

After the Lunar New Year, Ho Chi Minh City will invite the British Consulate General and several other agencies to attend the presentation of the project of Thu Duc City. “Besides, the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City will soon launch a working group for external relations and international integration”, Mr. Phong said.
