Phu Quoc Island Granted ‘Island City’ Status

Phu Quoc with strong advantages attracting world-class developers

The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has officially announced that Phu Quoc Island will become the country’s first island city.

Speaking at a ceremony held on January 8 to announce the establishment of Phu Quoc city, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh said Phu Quoc has experienced tremendous economic and social growth and urbanization, especially in recent years.

The establishment of Phu Quoc city will play an important role in the province’s socio-economic development and in asserting the country’s sovereignty over its waters and islands.

The island has an international airport, which opened in 2012. International airlines operate both commercial and charter flights to the island. The Government has identified Phu Quoc as one of the destinations in the country that will help revive international tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic is contained, according to Binh.

Phu Quoc is setting Singapore as the model to thrive for with its special features

Blessed with white sand, turquoise beaches and balmy weather nearly year-round, with two-thirds of the island covered in tropical forests, Phu Quoc is a tourism paradise.

It is the largest island in the country at 590,000sqkm, almost the same size as the city-state Singapore, and is known for white-sand beaches and resorts, mostly located along its palm-lined southwestern coast. The Phu Quoc National Park, with mountains, dense tropical jungle, hiking trails and wildlife, covers more than half of the island.

Apart from the natural beauty, tourists are also attracted by the island’s luxury resorts, golf courses, animal safari, and casinos, according to Binh.

The island is geographically close to other parts of Southeast Asia and near several international freight routes, and can be reached in less than two hours by air from major cities in the region.

However, the island faces challenges related to pollution, surging land prices, and a growing population, as well as education, healthcare quality, and safety and security issues, according to Binh.

“Becoming a city will enable Phu Quoc to address these problems,” he said.

Ms. Dang Phuong Hang, General Director of CBRE Vietnam affirmed that the model of developing “all in one”, including 3 key factors as below will be developed well once Phu Quoc grants its city title:

  • High-class trade and service center; a national and Southeast Asian science and technology center;
  • A high-class eco-tourism, resort and entertainment center capable of competing with big and famous tourist destinations of regional and international countries;
  • Financial center of regional stature and one of the driving force to promote socio-economic development of the whole country and the Mekong Delta region.

Masterise Homes and Marriott International to Bring Branded Residences to Vietnam

The projects that are currently in the planning stage are located in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, and will take the lead in introducing the urban branded residences concept in Vietnam.

The branded residences experience, as seen in many developed real estate markets, offers tremendous opportunities in Vietnam amidst rising demand for alternative residential products that offer the next level of luxury living. This positive outlook certainly bodes well for upcoming co-operation projects between Masterise Homes and Marriott International.

Grand Marina Saigon, the first highly anticipated project, is situated at a distinct location in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. Its site is the last remaining vast land plot at the northern bank of the river within District 1, with a unique waterfront and historical background.

The development is a large-scale, mixed-use complex with residential, office, and commercial features. It is expected to be Marriott International’s largest branded residence project in the world, and the company’s first foray into Vietnam’s highly vibrant branded residential market segment.
