Four bridges over the Saigon River are proposed to be named: Thu Thiem, Bason, Thu Ngu and Ben Nghe

Thu Thiem 1 bridge was proposed to be named Thu Thiem, Thu Thiem 2 bridge was named Bason, Thu Thiem 3 bridge was named Thu Ngu and Thu Thiem 4 bridge was named Ben Nghe.

Accordingly, Thu Thiem 1 bridge (completed in 2007, connecting Thu Duc city with Binh Thanh and District 1) is proposed to be named Thu Thiem. According to the Department of Culture and Sports, Thu Thiem is a name that appeared in the 18th century and now belongs to Thu Duc City. Thu was the guard post under the feudal period and was also the position of the head of an organization or administrative unit. Maybe the commander of the garrison was named Thiem, so people used to call it Thu Thiem.

Thu Thiem Bridge 2 connects from Thu Thiem to the area where Ba Son port is located, so it is proposed to be named Bason.

Bason is the name from 1790 when Lord Nguyen Anh set up a naval camp and built “Seawork” on the banks of the Saigon River. Bason is marked as the cradle of Vietnam’s shipbuilding and repairing industry.

Thu Thiem 3 Bridge is tentatively named Thu Ngu. Thu Ngu is the abbreviation for Thu Ngu Flagpole, built in 1865 at the intersection of Ben Nghe canal and Saigon River, opposite Nha Rong port. This work has the function of signaling ships entering and leaving Nha Rong port and also a signal for ships on the Saigon River to know to avoid getting lost in Can Gio or Vung Tau.

In addition, the Department of Culture and Sports proposed to name Thu Thiem 4 bridge as Ben Nghe. Ben Nghe is a place in the old Saigon – Gia Dinh land.

According to the book Phuong Dinh Du Geography in 1900, Nguyen Van Sieu explained that the name Ben Nghe came from the growl of crocodiles on the canal. According to him, the cry of the crocodiles echoing on the canal resembles the sound of a buffalo, so it can be understood as “ngé” combined with “water wharf”.
